April 2, 1995: This Clone War Has Begun

by Chris Seibold Apr 02, 2011

What do you call a computer that runs System 7.5, has a PowerPC 601, a 540 MB hard drive and a single button mouse? Well, until 1995 you called it an Apple Macintosh, starting in 1995 you could call it anything from a Starmax to a Motorola.

Before the clone fiasco was over there were myriad of clone makers but the first clone was Power Computing's Power 80. Running out 80 MHz it was spec'd roughly equivalent to the previously introduced PowerMac 7100,though the Power 80 cost considerably less.

It would start a trend that would last throughout the clone era: clone makers would consistently produce machines that were cheaper and faster than Apple manufactured Macs. The first nonApple produced computer that ran System 7.5 appeared this month in 1995.

  • I bought a PCC clone for the same reason. They were consistenly tweaking the system and processor speeds to get a little better performace than the comparable Apple model for a few dollars less.

They were great boxes but did nothing to expand the Macintosh market share.

  • I don’t really like apple products. For the price you have to spend on Apple computer you can buy twice as fast PC. I find Apple prods owner little posh.

  • It may be more dramatic to die on the floor of the emergency room than on the floor of your own bathroom, but isn’t that the only difference with the NHS? A biopsy you could have in 24 hours in the U.S., you have to wait 6 weeks for in the UK. If the delay is the difference between life and death, then only thing missing is newsworthy videotape and a 911 call.sohbetchat

  • I think clone wars are profitable to us, customers and users - Mac is only getting better after fighting clones.

  • Forget about the clone price. I think Apple stock was around $16 bucks at this point in time.
