July 14, 2002: Apple Previews Jaguar

by Chris Seibold Jul 14, 2008

In the great cavalcade of cat names the first one that really mattered was Jaguar, the code name for OS 10.2. The first iteration of OS X was code named Cheetah and offered as a beta version for $29.99. The second iteration was Puma and retailed for the, now, expected price of $129.00 (though those that took the Cheetah plunge were rewarded with a free upgrade).

Both 10.0 and 10.1 were limited when compared to both Windows and OS 9. They were slower, lacked support for many peripherals and generally didn't offer the typical user a very good experience (though the GUI did look good enough to lick). Jaguar promised to change all this.

Jaguar delivered. It was the first version of OS X considered truly productive by many and was the first time people were able to stop booting into Mac OS 9 to get things done. Jaguar was announced this week at the now defunct New York MacWorld expo in 2002.

  • For me, 10.2 was a step back in usability experience and was a system resource hog. 10.3 on up has been gold. Anxious as to what 10.5 has in store…

  • I have been a mac user for just over a year now and I just love OS-X 10.4 (Tiger).  What got me to switch was the UNIX underpinning of OS-X but what blew me away was the ease of use.  I an anxious for what great things Leopard may bring.

P.S. What will Apple do when they run out of easy to remember cat names? Ocelot does roll off the tongue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocelot)
