July 17, 2002: Apple Kills iTools

by Chris Seibold Jul 17, 2008

If you were using iTools, Apple's suite of web enhancements used to help lure people into buying Mac OS 8, you got a nasty bit of news when you checked your iTools account.

"Today we announced .Mac, pronounced "Dot Mac," that replaces the Apple iTools service. In the two and a half years since we introduced iTools, both the demand for Internet services and the cost of providing them has increased dramatically. As a result, we're no longer able to offer iTools for free."

Unsurprisingly, iTools users were not amused. The greatest outrage was saved for the loss of the .mac email address, an address many users had become dependant on. A loss made all the more painful by the abundance of free e-mails services other companies (including Microsoft) were offering. By way of recompense, Apple offered .mac for "only" 49.00 for the first and the price included a free virus checker for the virus free OS X. iTools afficiandos got the bad news on July 17, 2002.

  • I may be wrong, but I thought it was to promote Mac OS 9, as I remember there were a lot of tips showing you how to use iDisk with Mac OS 8.5 (which apple didn’t support).
