Live Report for WWDC 2007

by Gregory Ng Jun 11, 2007

11:14 Another last thing....The iPhone is shipping. Going on sale at 6 PM in the evening. But what about developers?!! There is now an innovative new way to create applications for mobile devices. It is all based on the fact that the full Safari engine is in the iPhone. You can write Web 2.0 and Ajax applications. They can integrate with iPhone services. They can make a call, send an email, look up a location on Google Maps. After running it you have instant distribution. They all run off the server. They are also secure. They are as secure as what Amazon and banks use. They run securely on the iPhone. There is no SDK. If you can write apps using modern web standards, you are all set.

11:13 How is it going to be distributed. There are 1,000,000 downlaods of iTunes a day, it will be tied in to the iTunes download. It is being released as a public beta today. It is also being released on Tiger and Windows today. http://www.apple.com/safri.

11:07 But...there is one more thing! Steve Jobs is announcing Safari for windows!! Safari will work with XP and Vista. Now comparing iBench stats for HTML performance. All running on XP. Safari is the twice as fast as IE. Now looking at javascript with Safari running on XP. Safari is now the most innovative browser, the fatest. Google and Yahoo search built-in. Now he is going to demo Safari running on a Windows box.

11:05 Now recapping the top 10 features. All attendess will be getting a copy today. Intend to ship it in October. There is a basic version....and a premium version....and an enterprise version...all $129. Huge round of applause and laughter.

11:02 Number 10 is Time Machine. Nothing we haven’t seen before, except that it is now integrated with QuickLook.

11:00 Showing how you can superimpose anyones face in iChat and only your lips show up. Kinda silly....

10:52 Number 9. iChat. Many comments have been received about video conferencing, all good. Better audio (AAC-LD), tabbed chats, photo-booth effects. iChat Theatre lets you share Applications (looks like just iPhoto and keynote for now). This works with quicklook, so anything that works with Quicklook can work with iChat. So anything that works with quicklook can be shared.

10:47 Number 8 is is dashboard. Webclip is being shown by Steve. You can take a snippet of any website and turn it into a widget.

Enjoying the coverage? Please visit one of our sponsors above!

10:44 Number 7 is Spaces. Already seen this, but now Steve is showing the final version. Basically you can create a series of spaces, where you can have sets of applications and window positioning.

10:42 Number 6. Bootcamp. It has had 2.5 million downloads. Bootcamp will be build in. No need to burn a CD anymore. Steve is saying that there are 3 ways to run Windows apps. Bootcamp, Parallels, and VMWare.

10:39 Number 5. Core Animation. Automatic animation, very simple to use. Text, images, video, OpenGL. You can compose things as scenes of layers. Steve is now going to demo this. Showing a custom intro to the Apple TV that is searchable. Very very dynamic application.

10:35 Now going over #4. Leopard is 64-bit now, top-bottom. Unix level, and the Cocoa level. Leopard will be the first mainstream 64-bit application. Only one version that runs both 32-bit and 64-bit. Showing a comparison side-by-side of loading a 4GB very high-rez image. Showing how much faster the 64-bit version is able to make changes vs the 32-bit. More than double the speed.

10:33 Now going over feature #3 called Quicklook. It lets you instantely preview files without having to open them. You can preview and even view apps without having to open up the application.

10:31 Now showing spotlight, and how it can search shared devices. Very fast.

10:29 Now showing how the connect to a mac work (apparently you can even use it to connect to Windows boxes).

10:27 Now going into actual demos. Even the Finder folders have been redesigned. You can now scroll through your documents, much like in iTunes, using coverflow mode. Not only that, but you can click on a pdf in coverflow, and click through the pages of the pdf, play a quicktime movie, etc.

10:26 Much cleaner sidebar. With a new Shared menu. Now going to the “Back to the Mac” feature. Basically lets you easily connect to any Mac (using .Mac) over the net.

10:23 Now going to number 2. New Finder! New Sidebar, spotlight can now search other Macs and servers. Much easier to share files with other computers. If you are a subscriber of .Mac you can use a new feature called “Back to Mac”. New finder in the finder it going to utlize coverflow. A fourth button on the Finder window to view in coverflow mode.

10:20 Now a new folder in the dock, as a stock, where all downloads will go, to keep the desktop clearn. Steve is going to demo the desktop. Preview has a new look, must be in the new Leopard skin. Showing the stacks and their usage of core animation. Very very cool.

10:16 Leopard is the 6th major release of OS X. It has 300 new features. Feature number 1, Leopard has a new desktop! New menu bar, new Dock. Menu bar is transparent across image. There is soing to be something called Stacks that allows you to clean up your desktop. Consistent new skin for OS X. Dock is now 3D

10:15 Now going onto discuss Leopard. Steve is talking about the huge success of Tiger. There are 22 million active OS X users. Two thirds of those users are running Tiger. 23 Percent are running Panther. 10 Percent are running an older versions than that (who the hell is that!!)

10:12 John Carmack from id is up on stage to premier something. This is the first time this is being shown in public. Was able to put it together pretty quickly. Artists can work on the game at the sametime.

  • The updated Finder is the best news out of the WWDC.  Can’t wait.

  • What happened to Resolution Independence? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I haven’t heard a single word about this.
P.S. I’m pumped like hell for Leopard.

  • A Steve Jobs keynote and only 4 comments?  Steve, where’s the mojo?!

I guess I’ll do a rundown of my reaction to the announcements.

New Desktop - nice stuff.  Aero-like translucent menus.  smile I like Aero, so that’s a good thing.  The “3D” Dock seems kind of bogus as a feature as does the Download folder (uh, can’t you do that already?), but I do like Stacks.  Seems cool.

Finder - about time.  I hope it’s a real improvement and not just eye-candy, but I like what I see so far.

    Quicklook - excellent.

Time Machine - we already knew about this one of course.  I’d like to see the specs on what kind of drives it needs.  Luckily drive prices are coming down.

Spaces - I never use Expose or any of the kind of super duper features that are supposed to make you more productive.  None of those things really help me all that much.  Maybe Spaces will be different.

iChat - it would be really nice if I personally knew anyone, anyone at all, that actually used it.

Dashboard - a movie widget?  Okay.  Big deal.  The widget maker seems alright, but I think we’ve seen this before.

Core Animation - other than the Finder improvement, this was my favorite demo.  That was teh hot.  Let’s hope developers take advantage of it.

Boot Camp - it’s included.  Other than that, not much different than Tiger.

Safari in Windows - I use Firefox.  When it comes out of beta, I might try it on my Vista machine, but I don’t even use it on the Mac.

  • I just want to say how upset I am that Phil Schiller didn’t take the opportunity when speaking through Ballmer’s mouth to say “Developers!” a few times.

  • YOU NEVER USE EXPOSE??!!!! How on earth do you stay sane?! It is the single best thing about the mac!

  • Agree about the Core Animation demo. This is stunning technology. Wil Shipley’s said some interesting things about it.

  • To me, Alt-tab is faster.

United States Beeblebrox had this to say on Jun 12, 2007 Posts: 2186
  • What I generally use it for is dragging items onto application windows, or between finder windows. After I discovered that you can use F9, 10 & 11 (and also Space to select a window after F9) while dragging an icon, that is.

Seriously, it will change your life. In the select domains of email attachments and moving files around, that is.

(I also use alt tab a lot, mostly alt tab Q for shutting down programs in the background. I find I have very discrete separate usage patterns for alt-tab and exposé, though.)

(The only problem with Exposé is it becomes so second nature, it’s my largest difficulty going back to PC from Mac. I still reach for the F11 key regularly using windows, and have a moment of panic when I realise I can’t use it. After working administrating PCs but using my own mac for work for a while though, I’m now pretty much completely versatile.)

  • I do use F11 quite a bit actually.  Very handy.  I guess Expose just doesn’t fit in well to my preferred work flow.

By the way, you can get Virtual Desktop for Tiger right now.  Again, it seems like the kind of thing that would be handy, but will it end up being another Expose in my case?
