How do I make my Mac into a Web Host and Mail server?

Having just built my own website (some friends have too) I think it is too damn pricey to pay a website host provider money each month for very little online space. I would like to turn my second mac into a host for both mine and my friends sites, thus hosting for free. This will also be great as i wont be limited with host space (well the max HD of the machine I suppose) being able to host larger quicktime movies and larger images etc would be really be amazing. Is anyone able to give any suggestions?

You can use a free service such as DynDNS.org to manage a dynamic IP, if that is in fact (and most likely) what you have. Unless you have a serious upstream (200KB+) or it’s just a text-based site with minimal graphics, I’d highly recommend just buying a web hosting package. They are NOT all bad deals, contrary to what some may say. I myself use one called Dreamhost, which offers 20GB of storage for less than $10 a month and 1TB bandwidth. If that isn’t a kick-butt deal, I don’t know WHAT is. And no, it’s not too good to be true… I run 4 different websites and over 20 domains from my account at dreamhost, and have never once had a problem with them. Just my two cents.
