This is purely speculation, but since they integrated the iSight into the iMac and the MacBook (Pro and otherwise,) it is logical to assume that they may incorporate the iSight into the standalone displays that they sell. I think that it would be pretty sweet!

yeah, they will, and it’ll be a great hit, specially for those who are getting a mac mini.

No doubt Apple’s new “Cinema Displays” (or whatever they call them) will have an in-built iSight for both the PowerMac (probably called “Mac Pro") and Mac Mini users ... but as in another topic here, many people just find it a useless add-on that’s more of a gimick.

Since the PowerMac’s Intel replacements are almost certainly going to be announced at the Developer’s Conference, there may well be new displays announced to go with them as well. Only about a month to wait and see.

Hey JD, been awhile.

It’s only a matter of time before the new displays are announced. If not at WWDC, then within 3-6 months afterwards, I’d estimate. They have to keep up with the silent upgrades and other misc hw/sw updates in between keynotes.

No doubt the new pro desktops will be announced. I can see them following the aluminum enclosure (ala MacBook Pros). I’m wondering if they’ll tweak the form factor since the Intel processors don’t have the heat issue as the G5 processors. That would be a tell-tale sign.

Including the iSight would seem to follow the current trend. I’m wondering if they’ll sport the new glossy screens like the MacBooks… mmm… shiny.

Have the new intel iMacs switched to glossy screens? I thought that was just a gimmick for the laptops to help with glare or something (though it would seem to do the opposite.) As for the new “Mac Pro” I believe the case design will remain basically the same only it will be smaller in size do to the lack of G5 heating issues (just like you said) it will probably sport two core duo chips in it and cost about is much or a little more than what they currently do.

This is kinda off topic for this post but do you think that Leopard will be the last PowerPC compatible OS upgrade? I certainly hope not because I don’t plan on switching from my current architecture to Intel for at least another year or two probably.

I can see them doing it for consistency, but I hardly ever use mine.  As in, twice I think since I got my iMac.

I doubt it. OS9 was supported for awhile before they dropped it. I can see PPC OSX support staying for some time to come since it has supported the Intel processors the whole time “Just in case” scenario. I suppose it would come down to the specific software vendor for certain titles. I bought a Quad last Jan, so I’m holding out for five or so years of PPC support. I’m planning on swapping my PPC mini w/an Intel as some point.

Back to iSight… I’ve had a iSight camera at work for a few years and don’t really have a use for it. Building it into the monitor won’t make a difference.

I don’t think that Apple should make built in iSight cameras on the Cinema Displays because the prices would probably go up and for someone like me, buying a Cinema Display is an expensive enough proposition so adding even more money to that already expensive price is a bad idea. Maybe if Apple made the iSight Camera an upgradeable option that would be one thing but not making standard on all of the Displays.

Nope, but of course certain features will not be possible, like virtualization which require the Intel chips. Eventually OS X 10.x.x will run in “Classic mode” when it is inevitably replaced and then the PowerPC chips will be defunct.

Five years?
