I have a questions that I hope someone can supply an answer.

I work in a PC environment, it took me some time but, I finally got the company to purchase one mac pro.  The IT department has it and is making sure that it can hook up with our network and they wanted to play with it for a while to see how it works.  In our office we already have a wireless server (Brand Siren) It can detect the network but when we type in the username and password it drops it. Our IT guy is saying that because it is a apple we have to buy the apple airport, but that does not make any sense to me.

Is there a setting or something that we are missing here?

First off Macs work with any large number of non-Apple wireless devices, including those made by Linksys, netware, etc., etc. Macs use the 802.11 protocol which has a number of varieties, including (off the top of my head here) a,b,g, and the newly released n. The point here is Macs don’t need airport to do wireless.

OK, now, as far as the specifics to your question I am not familiar with Brand Siren. It could very be that it is a properity system that requires some sort of Windows only software and or hardware configuration. I would ask your network people if it supports standard 802.11 protocols, if it does, you should be all set.

Let us know!

Thank you for your response. I was wrong, the brand is a linksys and it does support 802.11 g.

What he is telling me is that it does not seem to like the password. He knows he is typing it in correctly but it seems to disconnect every time.  He continues to work on it but he is getting frustrated.

The last thing I need is IT to get frustrated with this first experience.
