An apple g3 was donated to my church and given to me for some designing. I was told it was a g5 and I thought to myself, “Is this too good to be true?” I was right. It is a g3 with a whopping 64 mbs of ram. Anyway, is there any way to get parts into this to get it running like a g5? I would have to be able to run photoshop, illustrator, and flash in the least. Can you even upgrade the ram? any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Congrats on the donation! You can absolutely use your G3 for photoshop, illustrator, flash, etc but you need more ram. One great source is Ramjet (they do advertise on this site, but they are also great!). Depending on the g3 you have I think you should be able to bump it up to 1GB of ram pretty easily. Another thing you may want to do is bump up the hard-drive. Another great site is Macsales (also an advertiser) where you can look for hard-drive upgrades. As for an operating system I think you’ll have to stick with Tiger. Any other questions? |

i do not know how old this thread is but i found it on google. anyways i was also donated a b&w;g3 and i want to convert it to a g5 and i was wondering if it is possible? i know i can do hard drive upgrades and also ram upgrades but i also know i will not be able to put as much ram into this machine as i need. i already own a powerbook g4 and i have 2gb of ram in it and i run final cut studio 2 and also logic studio shake and i am planning on getting maya soon i am running leopard and i have final cut server and it requires that your computer have 1.80ghz and my powerbook only has 1.67ghz so i was wanting to upgrade my g3 with a new logic board that has a processor that is 1.80 ghz or faster and with a new board i should be able to run more ram. so is there any way i can do this? |

Hi there, and welcome to Apple Matters. Unfortunatly there is no way to upgrade the processor in the G3, just the ram and hard drive as you noted. Still, if you max out the ram (or at least get 512 in there) you can still install Tiger and have a great computing experience. Good luck! |

well i already install tiger and it only has 192ram plus i also installed a slave drive. i just wish there was some way i could upgrade the processor because i need to have at least 1.8 ghz or more. and i don’t have the money right now to buy a new mac pro or a used power mac g5 wich is what i want so i was just going to try to upgrade this one. |
