Enhanced A/V Mac mini

I severely want to see Apple produce a mac mini with enhanced A/V features.  Specifically, I want optical digital audio output!  I don’t want to have to hook up a ton of adapters and connectors to be able to use a mac mini with my home entertainment system.  I have the capability to host hundreds of gigs of media files on my desktop and stream them to a mini to watch on my tv - if only they made a mini that had the right connections!

I’m using my mini as a media center for my home starting w/AirTunes. It is really tight inside the mini, not sure how much real estate optical audio would need, however, the external HD/hubs (ministack, etc) have real poetntial. I currently have the LaCie mini 250GB HD. Even if an external A/V mini “component expander” would be a possibility, I’d be game for that. I remember the Quadra A/V boxes back in the day made a difference for the overall capabilities of the system.

it would be great to get a video-in adaptor to the mini. i would use it as a digital video recorder or as a media center. maybe i’d add it a mini stack for more video space. Is there the possibility to get a video-in adaptor for the mini?

Cheers dk.

I know Elgato makes tv tuners for Macs. http://www.elgato.com/index.php?file=products_eyetv200

That link makes me very hopeful for the future of the mini.

I would like to see an option for a mac htpc build. It really wouldn’t be much of a stretch. Maybe less like a PC and more like a server with a remote control. M Serve anyone? One machine for all your Home theater needs , as well as, options for serving your home network. Extra space for hard drives, print serving, etc…

Just a thought.

THANX and veeeeery good link!  .  .  now, all i have to do is to get the mac mini, it’ll rock as a media center. the thing here is that the mini plus the ministack plus the eyetv200 would make lots of devices. isnt there any internal video in adaptor for the mini???

interesting, but the mini can’t handle HD content, particularly the vaunted h.264 standard. they could do less than HD, maybe a 480 standard, but 720 and 1080 are a stretch. then again, if they had different releases for different stanadrds of systems,it might work. grin

i would leave the mini the way it is and use it as a home stereo.

What about an integrated 5.1 bluetooth hub?  Maybe Apple should be (might be) working on wifi surround technology…
