Beware of Maxtor support and warranties. I’ve had some bad experiences. I had one fail two days after 1-year warranty and they refused to talk to me. Problem was enclosure, NOT drive, which they refused to support. Went to OWC and got a new enclosure which works fine.

motherduce - Oct 04, 2005 09:11am Nedrick, it’s not really building your own hard drive, you’ll just be taking an internal hard drive and slapping it into an enclosure. It’s not complicated, and it’s much more flexible and inexpensive than buying a pre-built external hard drive (which is basically the same exact thing, just taking it a small step forward).
Why pay an extra $100-$200 when you can do that extra step yourself, plus leave yourself with expandability options…
Good point Motherduce. I don’t have a problem dabbling with computers now & then.

Rgator - Oct 02, 2005 11:21am I guess that I say this because in all of my shopping around for drives and enclosures, I have not found any enclosures that are Serial - SATA. If there are those available too, then I must say to be careful to buy a drive and enclosure that matches.
Just because you’ve never seen a product doesn’t mean its not a good product. I have never had any problems with a SATA drive or enclosure.

Is there any difference in cases? (I know Motherduce is high on the Metal Gear Box.) As long as it’s compatible and has the interfaces I need, should be fine, right?

fwiw, there are SATA solutions available. they are few and far between, but are becoming more and more an option. many SATA drives have native command queing which help on performance, not sure how much that would help w/ an external drive though.

eBay has interesting deals too. Once I bought a 250 in an enclosure, it’s a Seagate HDD and some 3rd part enclosure and it worked out fine and didn’t cost much. Another time I bought the enclosure and a DVD-R separately and put them together. I don’t really worry about non-brand name enclosure as it’s just a small IDE + USB and/or Firewire and a powersupply, no biggy. Actually I burned out my Lacie firewire enclosure because I had dismantled it and out it back together wrong (stupid stamped metal cage, shorting out my power supply). The new one works the same way.

yikes! lol. yeh, the chipsets used in the enclosures usually come from a select few manufacturers, hence there isn’t a big difference between brand name and non brand name. usually w/ a bit of research u can also find out which chipsets, that are well reviewed, are in given enclosures.

What’s the real difference between the chipsets anyhow?

the differences i tend to research the most are transfer rates. i.e.- some FW/USB combo chipsets have good FW thru-put but are paltry on the USB2 side. i prefer combo setups as it keeps my options open when moving from system to system.

maxtor one touch series drives are the best option to use as an external drive. i have a One touch II (not firewire, usb 2.0) and works really cool.
