I wish Apple would recognize that place that so many Americans (and Japanese and others) spend so much of their time and a huge chunk of their money--their cars. Cars have become more and more computerized yet there is little interface with the user. Car manufacturers have focused their computerization efforts catering to automotive repair and maintenance. Of all of the brainpower that today’s most advanced cars have, few provide info the the guy who’s paying the bill. Apple should make a product that interfaces with the car’s systems to give users information about their vechicle that only techs with proprietary equipment can get. This product should also serve many of the entertainment functions that we have come to expect and a lot more. It could integrate with the vehicles navigation (NAV) system to provide directions to places that you have downloaded from your computer. It could sync with the NAV and iCal and provide a busy real estate agent directions to all the properties on today’s to-do list and other appointments. The device could detach from the vehicle and continue to serve as a portable PDA when the user goes on foot or in the home or office. This product could cost as much as an iMac and not make dent in the average cost of a new car, but would add a lot of value. I’d love a product like that and I’ll bet the carmaker who gets in bed with Apple to produce it will sell a lot of cars. What do you think?
