It’s not even half-way through November (despite Christmas adverts and decorations going up everywhere) and already the rumours for new Apple gear next year are starting:
* Intel iBook at MacWorld in January (plus $200 price drop)
* Intel Mac Mini at Mac World in January
* smaller iPod Shuffle in January
* Intel PowerBooks released not long afterwards
Forget Christmas, you might want to start saving your money for new Apple bits early next year.

I’m going to snag a new iMac before the intels come out. I sont want to get a 1st or 2nd gen intel. I’m going to wait for the bugs to get worked out.

That’s exactly the way I feel about it. I think there will be a lot of kinks to iron out with this migration. Not only will it be software (third-party, OS and translation through Rosetta) adjustments but hardware as well.
The top of the line iMac G5 for me too with RAM maxed out should carry me well and safely into the MacIntel era. Then I’ll reassess my position once two or three MacIntel generations will have swept by.

The problem will be that software will eventually stop being made for PowerPC Macs, which may or may not be important depending on what you use your Mac for and how often you upgrade it. Of course, a similar thing happened when Apple moved to Mac OS X, but there is still software released for “Classic” Macs, just that it’s mostly (if not all) shareware and not the big name applications.
Even if Rosetta is twice as good as Mac OS X’s “Classic”, it’ll still be next to useless.

Yes and when software will stop being written for PowerPC I’ll be using a MacIntel. And if you recall, the first chip furor was in the early 90s when Apple went PowerPC. Well in the late 90s I saw there was still apps being made in the FAT format to suit both chips. So I have good reason to believe it will not be a drastic move but a gradual one. Besides His Steveness isn’t an idiot: he damn well knows he is risking big here so he will try not to alienate Mac users. After all he has surely seen (even from afar) how many Mac users left the ship when the transition toward PowerPC happened.

Stretch,
I’ve thought about the bug issues too, although you have to think that given the fact this isn’t a new chipset there are going to be less bugs than usual. Also, Apple has admitted it has had these Intel boxes around for a long time.
Personally I can’t wait to see what the physical design of the new powerbook line will be. We’ve been living with (and enjoying!) the aluminum and titanium form-factor for a while now. In many ways the current design is extremely understated, what will the new design bring? Will it be a new design? Or just the current forum-factor with an Intel chip in there?

The next case designs will use dehydrated apples, so if you get hungry while working you can just take a bite out of the case and it makes them easy to dispose of (when the time comes) without filling landfills.

Any new rumour buzz out there? I haven’t heard much of anything new since the last posts here in late Nov.

Only on-going “news” that Intel Macs are coming in January / February, plus the even smaller iPod Shuffle. Not much longer to wait to see if those come true.
The latest is that Apple are so busy with the Intel-based laptops and iMac that they’ve given the designing of the Intel-PowerMac motherboard over to Intel to do.

Even bigger Apple screens?? Geez, I thought the 30” ones were too expensive.
This is from MacRumors.com ...
Apple to Announce 42’’ and 50’’ Plasma Viiv Displays?
PowerPage.org posts an unusual report claiming that Apple would be releasing 42inch and 50inch Plasma Displays at Macworld San Francisco.
That possibility alone would be quite unusual for Apple, but the report describes that the new plasma displays will be powered by Intel’s recently announced Viiv multimedia platform running Mac OS X 10.4.4 for x86 (Intel).
Prices for the displays/computers are reportedly $2599 and $3299.
The report is unusual in that it is written as a story, presumably to hide the source of the information. Of note, ThinkSecret has recently suggested that Apple will be releasing a larger than 30” Cinema Display.
Current Apple Cinema Displays rely on LCD technology—not Plasma. However, throughout the industry, 42” is typically where the Plasma sets start, while LCD’s become significantly more expensive at these larger sizes.
Meanwhile, there have been ongoing reports of a Viiv-Apple connection.
Only a few more days until we find out.

Hopefully the monitor prices will drop again. They’re about due, especially since they introduced the better displays in the portables with the last update.
