My first Mac year

I’m approaching the one year anniversary of my first Mac purchase: a 15” Powerbook.  I’ve had such a positive experience that it began a landslide change in the web development company I work for.  Within a couple months of my purchase the small company switched all desktops from Linux to Mac Minis.  My boss also switched laptops to a Powerbook.

I was a Windows user for over 15 years.  Over time I came to dislike it more and more.  I switched to Linux and never looked back.  Then after 5 or so years of Linux I got tired of “managing” my desktop.  I wanted a computer that Just Worked (TM).  I was also in the mood to switch to a laptop.  After hearing Apple made the best laptop hardware I read a lot about OS X and was sold.  Now after a year I can say I’ve been far more productive than ever.  And OS X works quite well with our Linux server development so there’s literally nothing holding me back.

Today I recommend Macs to everyone.  With the Mini I can finally recommend a cheap Mac to every computer user I run into.  I’m happy to share one more positive story with everyone.

Glad to hear of your overall positive experience. Been using Macs for about 18 years now. OSX just keeps getting better. Panther and Tiger have upped the bar. Hopefully the future releases of OSX keep this trend going. Minis are indeed fantastic little boxes.

I would actually recommend looking back at OSs you’ve abandoned after a certain number of years.  I thought I had left Macs for good after my horrendours nightmarish experiences with OS 9 both at home and in an enterprise environment.  But a few years later, I re-entered the Mac fray with the rise of FCP as the premiere indie NLE.  I really dig it.

But I still use XP machines and I dig them too, particularly my widescreen laptop.  I’m looking forward to trying Vista as well.

I’ve used Windows for the past 11 or so years, since 95 at least and I was getting so fed up with it toward XP - the constant hassles of drivers, virus’, trojans, constantly maintaining my computer, never being able to set up a reliable and secure network, always having issues at some point.  So much so I spent less and less time at my PC and only did work on it when I really needed to.  I had a friend who had used Macs for years and I was always taking the biscuit out of him for using such a rubbish system.  I mean what are Macs?  They can’t run any games, have hardly any decent software for them, the mouse has one button.  What the hell is that about?

Then I used one and I’ve long since regretted being so ignorant toward something.  I now despise people like I used to be.  The Mac is, without a doubt, the most advanced, easiest and most pleasurable operating system I’ve ever used.  I do not care what Windows users say, XP has nothing on OS X.  I’ve never been excited to use a computer before and even after nearly a year and a half of owning my iMac I’m still loving it.

I’m now the one getting the biscuit taken out of me by mates, but I can sit back, take it and laugh back at them knowing how foolish they’re being.  Infact, I think they’re starting to realise how much better OS X and Macs are because they’re no longer really slating the system, but admiring it.

After all, all those PC users out there who bash Macs, note how many of them are spending hours at a time trying to convert their desktop to look like a Mac operating system.

Hmmm. First Mac was a MacPlus. Awesome 20 Mb external SCSI drive.

I loved MacPaint, then SuperPaint.

1984!
