Again: Popularity does not mean the product is any good or the best product.  rolleyes

If the majority of people like it than Microsoft must be doing something right with it.

A lot of people bought VHS video recorders and eventually killed off the Beta video recorder. Beta was the better product, but the reason people bought VHS was because it was cheaper and “good enough”.

A lot of people use Windoze, but a large proportion of them do so because they don’t know that there is another choice, or because they’ve been told (often by an IT “expert") that they must use it to be comatible with everyone else, or because Macs are just for graphics, or numerous other ridiculous reasons ... and one of those reasons is again because Windoze computers are cheaper.

The main reason the Xbox 360 is currently so popular is simply because it’s the first, and being first doesn’t make something any good or the best product either.

The Xbox 360 is definitely a good system, and the Xbox 360 will still be popular even after the Wii and the PS3 come out because it will still be a better value than the PS3. Given the Wii will be the best but the 360 will not be the worst. Another thing, you mentioned that people only buy Windows because it is cheaper and that is not true. People buy Windows computers because they might need to for some reason. There are many reasons why people buy Windows instead of Mac one of which might simply be that they are more comfortable with Windows and dont want to take the time to learn a new operating system. Or maybe they once had or heard about a really bad expierience with a Mac or with Apple so that turned them off. You are making way to many generalizations.

Of course there are many reasons people buy a Windoze computer, including some people prefering it to the Mac OS, but as I said, some of those reasons have nothing to do with it being a better product. Windoze computers are cheaper than Macs, that’s a proven fact. Apple purposely prices their equipment a little higher in the (rather silly) belief that people are willing to pay more for better quality - some do, but many more simply go with the cheapest option that’s “good enough”.

Saying something is a good product just because “lots of” people buy it is obviously silly. In fact, if you take it to the ridiculous extreme, then Hilter must have been a great man because “lots of” people followed him and his ideas (and many idiots still do).  rolleyes

It’s unlikely that the Xbox 360 will be “better value”. For a start the Sony and Nintendo consoles will both ship with a next generation DVD drive (either Blu-ray or HD-DVD), whereas Xbox 360 owners will either have to buy an upgrade or an entire new Xbox 360 ... Microsoft will definitely not be shipping one free to every existing owner. The Xbox 360 will also be about a year out of date by the time the others ship, and many people simply buy the latests toy on the block regardless of how good or otherwise it is.

Yet again, this has gone off the topic of a Microsoft iPod and iTunes clone.

If some one prefers Windows to Mac than in their opinion it is better. It is not a fact that Windows stinks and Mac rocks it all depends on your opinion. And even though the PS3 will feature blu-ray technology it still wont be worth buying over the Xbox 360 because it will be so expensive, and as I said the Wii will definitely be better than the Xbox 360 so I am not arguing with you there.

Actually the biggest contributing factor to the demise of the beta was that the porn industry used VHS. It wasn’t a consumer choice on the technology but a choice on wanting the biggest selection of porn. The VHS victory was not consumer lead one but industry lead.

For those interested, there’s some more details about Microsoft’s iPod “killer” clone device at iLounge (formerly iPod Lounge before Apple threw temper tantrums about people using “iPod” in their own names). From a quick read it looks like another of Microsoft’s bad copies of someone else’s work.  rolleyes

So as another commentator has said:

“Microsoft’s much hyped iPod competitor was just a repacked Toshiba player with some different software.”

“It is just repackaging a decent player from Toshiba and adding some better software to it.”

http://www.applematters.com/index.php/section/comments/zune-the-ipod-killer-that-never-was/

So Microsoft from the looks of this Microsoft is not bringing anything new to the market. There is nothing here that is going to blow away the Apple-Ipod dominance. ...maybe in a few years...maybe.
