What with the last three Leopard seeds coming so rapidly, is the release of Leopard imminent? Apple has a 30-second Super Bowl halftime commercial, and while the Beatles’ music coming to iTunes is a no-brainer, I think that Apple’s money is better spent by using that announcement as a teaser for Jobs’ “one more thing” he didn’t get to announce at MWSF.
After all, the iPhone is a VERY BIG deal, and he wanted nothing to take away any of its thunder. I think the time is right for a major announcement from Apple, coming, as it is, on the heels of Microsoft’s Vista launch. This will most certainly take away Microsoft’s media attention. Also, a touch--screen video iPod, modeled after the iPhone, as well as the “octo-core” or 8-core Mac Pro would not surprise me. Also, isn’t the Mac Mini due for a Core 2 Duo upgrade? I think some, or all, of these products will come out either in February or March, but I would love to have Leopard come out in sooner rather than later.

There is now way Leopard is coming at in February. Apple is going to allow as much time for the suspense to build up before releasing it. If they announce it during the Superbowl and it comes out in late February then then there will not be any time for people to get all excited, to die of anticipation, and order it.

Apple may want the buzz to build, but they also may want to take away from the vista buzz. If people are going to need to buy a new computer to get vista why not buy a mac and get leopard. If people upgrade to vista they will be reluctant to pay to switch to a mac after paying for vista. An early release of Leopard would reduce the Microsoft sales and maybe increase the apple market share.
It could also be argued that competing directly with vista will lose most of the news cycle to vista but I’m not convinced because every time there is a vista story there will be at least a sentence to say apple has also released a new OS; as well as many comparison stories.
It is unlikely the super bowl will be the launch or pre-launch of Leopard, but it is not a bad idea. It is more likely that the 30 seconds will just be an ipod advert during the most watched sports event in the US (possibly most watched anything in the US?).
I think most Mac users are already dieing to get their hands on leopard.

The word I heard from Macworld was the Leopard was “nowhere close” to being released. I think we’re months away, not days or weeks.

So sad… but i’ve hear somewhere that iWork ‘07 and iLife ‘07 would come alongside with leopard as early as march. read here

What happened to apples super bowl commercial? There wasn’t even an Ipod commercial let alone a big new release commercial. Was this just a rumour or did apple buy airtime and sell it on?

What does everyone think that a realistic release date for Leopard is? I wish Apple would at least make an announcement about it. I hope that they do not make us wait until WWDC for the announcement on Leopard.

I say April. If you look at when 10.4 was released...that was april 2 years ago…

April is as good a guess as any but I think that Apple would have made an announcement by now if Leopard was to be released in April.

Why would they do it so close to the announcement. I would think that Apple would let the anticipation build so that Apple would get more people buying it as more people got more excited about it.

There is no difference between release and shipping.

Sure there is. Apple releases products and then ships them a few weeks later. If you look at the iTV and New Airport Extreme Base Station. They were released about a month before shipping
