The trackpad wheel and the click wheel work the same way for scrolling but the click wheel has the buttons imbedded underneath the wheel while the trackpad wheel had the buttons in a ring around the wheel. Look below for pics. The one on the left is the trackpad wheel and the right is the clickwheel.

See that’s where things get hazy in my opinion. Some people say that at the release of the original iPod Photo, because the 4G iPods were still being sold, it is its own entity much the same way as the Mini, Shuffle, and Nano lines. And then during the release of the color screens for the entire iPod line, that is 5G.

No resource on Apple that I have been able to find shed any clarity to this issue.

Bigmac, the reason that I think that people still consider the color models to be 4G is because they use a lot of the same processors, form factor and click wheel...that is how i think of it...but yeah, i agree this is a gray area that is open to talk..

I agree, but I am sure that others would argue that the color screen and enhanced battery life, are large enough changes to consider it a 5th generation.

I personally still consider color iPods as being 4G.
Like updated 4G models. Because they were released quietly (for the general public, of course) But that’s just me.

What about the “Harry Potter” iPod is that being considered as separate from the 20GB colour iPod?

The Harry Potter iPod is essentially an iPod with a Harry Potter symbol on the back, so it is considered a 4th generation iPod.

I think it’s time to update this list with the 5G iPods, which I’m assuming these new iPods qualify as.
