Do you think that the video codec will affect the ipod video’s battery life?Do you think 3 hours of battery life is enough, for when you watch a video?

I think that the codec will have little or no effect on the battery life. The main drains will be from the hdd constantly spinning to play the video and the backlight. Also I think 3 hours is short but do able. I am planning to purchase an external battery pack for extended video playback. The only time i would need this is long plane or car rides (can also use the car charger for car rides). It would be nice if the battery life was longer but i can live with it. |

I don’t see why it would.
I’m sincerely hoping and praying that the practical battery life ends up being more like 4 or 5 hours. Ideally, it would be 15-20 hours like it is for music. I have to admit I’m very disappointed by these low estimates. |

Aren’t there supplemental battery packs you can for the iPod? I wonder if one of those would work. |

I read on mac bytes, that there is an update for the firmware of the new ipod, maybe this could improve the battery life. |

I agree that would be amazing. I would always keep a spare battery with me |

the design of the iPod video, thus far, was made to view what u’ve seen offered by ITMS, 40 minute videos, short films, and music videos. it seems relative. sure i may not be able to watch braveheart on one if i get only 3 hours of video, but i can watch prolly as many music videos as i’d care to, or 5 TV episodes of choice. granted by then the battery is drained, but hopefully the intended use of the device is more apparent. i’m guessing the pplmiffed by the vidoe playback times are the ones looking to custom their own DVDs onto the device, in which case the battery pack seems to be a helpful alternative. i’m gonna take a wild guess here, and say that around the time a good deal of content and movie makers are on board for distribution, we’ll have a nice new spiffy iPod w/ longer battery life. |

I doubt it’s as much a conscious effort as it is simply running up against the wall of battery technology, which really really sucks. We can fake a moon landing but we can’t build a battery that lasts more than 3 hours in a video iPod. :( |

Yes, of course there are, there is one rechargeable one, that claims 40 hours of battery life, so for video, that would be 6 hours + the ipods internal 3 hour s= 9 hours of battery life. |

9 hours is certainly much more practical. |

Yes but still not as good as 20 hours, so I am going to try to build a high capacity battery into a backpack, and have a dock connector come out of the strap, What do you think? |
