This is a totally arbitrary number but I always have felt that and gadget worth its weight in gold should have a battery life that would last on a plane trip across the United States.
I know arbitrary but thats me.

yes, I agree. It is quite frusterating when on a plane you aren’t at your destination yet and your ipod dies. Then you have to sit there and walk to the guy next to you or just sit in silence

Go for it. And make me one while you’re at it.
Feel free to make one for me too
I am surprised, that no one has created such an item yet, maybe I’ll post a how-to for this, since most of us can agree that 3 hours is wimpy.

It’s done for other kinds of products. In film we use battery belts. It couldn’t be that bulky and heavy, of course, but it’s a good proof of concept.

But most people can put things together, people have ipods, ipods need better battery life, people have backpacks, beeb has expensive battery belts, ipod+ beebs belt+ backpack= ipod extended battery backpack.

um yeah...say that 10 times as fast u can. it’s be cool if someone made a battery pack that the iPod could kind of nest into, instead of the dongle solutions i’ve seen. it’d ad to the weight, but as noted in some reviews, if you’re watching video you’re not going to be running, driving, or much of anything else while trying to watch.

I don’t know who suggested it, but a removable battery would be useful.

Hmmm, I think that was....let’s see....EVERYONE. EVERYONE has suggested that Apple make the battery removable.
But it would violate Apple’s design philosophy. I think that’s the philosophy where the iPod is designed to take as much of your money as possible.

Oh come on, do batteries really need that much replacing? It’s not like iPods are so disposable because of the batteries going dead. Although it does suck that 1Gs should have their batteries replaced by now.

Yes. That’s probably by far the number one complaint. Apple was even involved in a class action suit because of it.
Imagine this was your cell phone (in other words, imagine it wasn’t Apple doing this) and it had to be sent away to the manufacturer whenever the battery needed replacing. And I’ve replaced the battery in every cell phone I’ve had.
It’s absolutely asinine to have a battery-driven consumer device, especially one as popular as the iPod, that has such battery problems and yet the battery can’t be replaced by the consumer.

any rechargeable battery has a life cycle. you don’t buy a rechargeable bettery for a flashlight or a walkman and expect it to last forever do you? I have a friend who bought theirs at Futureshop and got the extended warranty for this very reason. They cover the battery life for up to 3 years.

When the batteries die for my flashlight or a Walkman, I can go to Best Buy or Radio Shack and buy new ones.
I don’t have to send it off to the manufacturer and pay $99. And I don’t have to get suckered into buying an extended warranty just because the manufacturer won’t let me replace the batteries on my own ("You got a problem with our batteries? Just buy our extended warranty and pay for the replacement in advance, even if you never need it! Chump!").
That’s called raping the consumer, particularly if you have a monopoly on the market. Why you’re apologizing for this, I have no idea. No other company would get this kind of defense from trying to pull something so egregious.

Beebs, gotta agree with you on this one. Keep that $99 figure in mind when you’re buying an iPod. Down the line, that adds up to the overall price.
Granted all portable players suck batteries over time and some are easy and inexpensive to replace, while others are not. It would be nice to have cheaper third-party batteries and actually have a choice.

You’re right, it’s $66 now. They are slightly less money-grubbing monopolists than I had originally asserted.
This is along the lines of Microsoft charging the user for protection from the flaws in its own system.
