There is at least one company selling bigger capacity batteries for iPods. I don’t know if they work in the iPod Video, but no doubt will soon if they don’t.
Fastmac ships long-lasting battery for click-wheel iPod
August 22 - 14:15 EDT
Fastmac today announced that it has started shipping its long-lasting battery upgrade for Apple’s 4th generation iPod with click-wheel. The company says that all customers that placed pre-orders through the its Web site will receive their shipments in the next few days, along with their free gift with purchase. Fastmac has also extended the free charger with iPod battery offer until midnight, August 31st, 2005. Orders placed via the company’s Web site will receive their choice of a free travel charger or cigarette lighter adapter. “Fastmac’s TruePower battery upgrades replace the iPod’s original internal battery with a larger capacity and longer lasting advanced power cell battery,” notes the company. “The upgrades offer 20- 70% more capacity than the original OEM battery and up to 7.5 times as many charge cycles.”
They’ll also dispose of the old battery for free.

This is along the lines of Microsoft charging the user for protection from the flaws in its own system.
ah u mean the money they don’t give u to buy warrantied 3rd party software to help secure the OS from it’s inherent security flaws that it should be liable for in the first place?
but yeah, the battery ballyhoo was a bunch of crap. i still don’t know why they can’t design a solution to allow for sleek lines and a removable/replaceable battery.

Actually I mean MS charging you for security software to secure their own system’s security flaws.
In both cases, the companies are basically asking you to pay additional money to them to protect you from their own flawed system. It’s quite the money-grubbing racket.

1/3 isn’t slight but either way there’s DIY, don’t tell me that the iPod form factor is for sake of it being hard to open (and not just slick and sturdy)

My brother got one for his g1 iPod, it works well, except that it’s old and the thing doesn’t close properly anymore, oh and the large firewire port DOES collect dirt and look ugly. the G1 is so much a first gen.

Would you recommend 3rd party battery replacements? I personally like external battery packs more.

Do the externals recharge the iPod or do they have to remain connected to work?

The problem with the Fastmac internal is that it doesn’t really say how much more battery life you get. And you have to give up the old battery.
I think the better solution is the external pack. It ADDS battery life. The downside, of course, is that it adds bulk as well, but the form factor is less important to me than being able to make a five hour plane trip on one charge.

For the most part I never use half of my iPod’s battery life, but I think you’re right, in circumstances like a trip etc it would be useful.
According to their website their battery life is exponentially better than the OEM battery.

I never use half my battery life either...for music. But video is apparently substantially different. It would take only one movie to kill almost your entire battery.

I am hoping that we will end up getting better battery life, if/when apple releases a firmware update for video playback.

Here’s a backup solution that runs on 4 regular AA’s and adds up to 20 HOURS of battery life for music. That’s at least 3 more hours of video.
