    Minimalist Mac Freeware—Six Great Apps
  • Good job Chris. Except.. uhhh.. I think I said the New Meghertz Myth part... Unless I missed Sterling mentioning it in an earlier post... ((in this article's comments) http://www.applematters.com/article/giving-microsoft-bad-ideas/ Have a Happy Easter!

Macs: Round Pegs in Square Holes
  • You know after seeing both new Microsquish ads that tout others' hardware, rather than the software that M$ makes, I think they are strying to restart the "Megahertz Myth" with the easiest differentiating factor left: Screen pixels vs screen inches. Yes That's what I think they are pointing for. More inches is better... but not always! Here are the screen resolutions of her HP, and the Macbook/MBP. HP resolution--1440x900, MacBook 13 resolution--1280 by 800, MacBookPro 15 & 17 inch--1440 by 900 and less The MacBook's screen resolution is 80% of the HP's screen res. Watch this. It's a new MegaHertz Myth... from Alaska in the early morning sun

    Giving Microsoft Bad Ideas
  • Ok great comments guys. Now back to the article's (semi) stated purpose... What will that disaster be? Ths loss of a couple million Social security numbers? (OOps already lost 2 or 3 times in US & UK) How about a data breach with over 10 million customers' info? (TJX anyone) Or how bout shutting down a whole critical network for several days. (some school this week & Houston Courts) Those are serious. If I were in charge I would seriously think about changing what I do.. I am afraid it's gonna take a break in that siphons pay away from Congress & or the Pres.. that will get their notice. And whatever they use, it would be nice to get new from the ground up. IMHO Apple's solution is complete & easy to use & deploy, but Linux can be just as secure & run on cheaper hardware. Just an opinion in the morning from North Pole
  • While it does not surprise me Apple continues to sell "luxury" priced machines; And that I want a cheaper machine with modern guts but an older-style shell; The fact is Apple makes high quality Lexus style computers. Good machines that will remain reliable for a long time, all the while maintaining a high resale value. Made with precise standards, state-of-the-arts parts, (*he*he*) and making serious cash which is pumped back into the products. You watch. The Carnegie School/Method of Business was 20th Century... Welcome to the Apple School of BUsiness. Rambling on a Tuesday night :)

October 3, 1979: What Should a Mac Do?
  • I vote for Marathon! I STILL replay the original (thru the Aleph 1 project) about once a year. The original had the music, story, and puzzles perfectly balanced. It jolted me in how original it was. Kinda like the first time I saw ALIEN in the theaters. No one knew what was around the next corner. it changed things forever... The Best Old Mac Game Ever
  • Ohhhh No. My first thought on hearing this was "Oh $HIT! They're gonna pull another hotmail & ruin a perfectly good thing in Yahoo!. Look how they screwed up Hotmail-- turned it into a poorly run, mess-o-virus-spreading-code with arbitrary rules and basically blocked by the whole world as a spreader-of-spam. How many of us actually use a hotmail account anymore? For that matter how many of us TRUST Micro$quish with our login info... This would be bad for the web... very bad... good for google, but bad overall. On the other hand it would be Micro$quish's final failure... Like you said, there's no way they could do it right. And that's my 3.5¢ from the fifty-below North Pole... (Alaska)

Microsoft, Always a Source of Amusement
  • Hey now You! **waggling my finger-- Grandma like** You leave those poor dungarees alone! Why we up here in Alaska truly live in them. I got my first pair in 7th grade (that was 1980 for those who actually care) and i just purchased my 12th new pair since then. Yes they last an average of 18 months before I can't wear them to work & they become work jeans. We love jeans! (Except in the really hot summers... and when they get wet in the fall time... and after thanksgiving when they have to be unbuttoned... ) John Fairbanks, Alaska

    Review: Jeans
  • I find Apple apps like the venerable Appleworks & Pages to be more than sufficient word processing apps. In today's day & age a DTP/Page Layout app IS a Word Processor. It's what has come to be expected over the years. As a teacher I do a lot of plain old writing. I also do a lot of page layout when I create student worksheets/quizzes/informational information. A good example of this is the vertical fraction, as opposed to the horizontal one. Adding a vertical fraction as a word processor is (IMHO) impossible. But add it a a floating text object & everything works out & looks nice. As for DTP & Layout capabilities, originally Appleworks could do it, so Word had to bolt it on later. (after the best Word 5.1a) As a result I prefer Pages to Word because adding floating elements on top of my text is a few steps easier in Pages. (In fact I know it can be done in Word, but I haven't figured it out yet because I feel it should be intuitive and I refuse to read the Word directions.) After writing this I feel I like the Apple Apps because they are not the jack-of-all trades that others try to be (especially Office). They are sleek, limited to what MOST of us USUALLY use and INTUITIVE to figure out. What MOST of us USUALLY use & INTUITIVE. That's the mantra of Apple Apps. Why Do I Use Apple's Apps?
  • Software pricing, especially Shareware, has been fair in my experience. If you need something a little bit, there is a sub $25 shareware for it (MarinerWrite). (If you need it professionally thre is also a full-strength expansive app too-- Word, for example). My all-time favorite piece of shareware is GraphicConverter. I've been with it since version 2.2, and Thorsten keeps it regularly updated & has even incorporated several of my suggestions. (It's at 5.9.5 now) Originally paid $35 & added $10 to update to OS X. Best money EVER paid for ANY software! (even better than those "free" copies of Office i used to get from work... Not any more tho) Thanks, John Boyarsky 7th & 8th Grade Math & Yearbook Guy

    How Much Should Software Cost?
  • Because it's just an Apple product and "those dumb other manufacturers haven't learned how to work out the kinks". So sez my Fianceé & I agree!
