April 27, 1989: Pixar Stops Developing Hardware

When Steve Jobs bought what would become Pixar from George Lucas he bought the company with the idea that they would build highend computers to sell to movie mogul types. The sales were slow, to say the least, with only Disney buying the hardware.

Pixar may have been an animation powerhouse in waiting but they were so broke they were borrowing computers from Sun Microsystems just to interface with their high-end machines. Steve finally came to the realization that he had a stone cold loser on his hands when it came to selling Pixar hardware.

Steve folded the hardware division of Pixar and wondered how to make the company profitable this month in 1989.
