December 27, 1990: NeXTstation, NeXTcube Ship

When Steve Jobs introduced the first NeXT, the press was overwhelmed. Computer buyers, who let their opinions be noted via the exchange of currency for said computers, were much less impressed.

The problem with sales was thought to reside in the specs. The original NeXT relied on a nonstandard disk drive, lacked color, and was regarded by users as slow. NeXT decided to address the objections with the succeeding models.

Four new models rolled out, powered by a Motorola '040 processor. Color was an option, expandability was increased and prices were dropped. It didn't help, but NeXt was hopeful the changes in the NeXT lineup would make the machines successful when the NeXTstation and NeXTcube shipped this month in 1990.
