December 3, 1991: QuickTime 1.0

by Chris Seibold Dec 03, 2010

QuickTime powers a lot of what people love about the Mac. iMovie runs on QuickTime, as does Final Cut. QuickTime is also essential to iTunes for both audio and video purchases. Naturally, iDVD makes heavy use of the technology.

QuickTime wasn't always a mainstay of the Mac experience. It was originally released as an additional bit of programming for System 6 that allowed users to play video clips on their machines.

The small add-on that would later play a huge role in the Mac experience had been available for only 24 hours on December 3, 1991.
