July 25, 1992: Woz Starts Teaching

by Chris Seibold Jul 25, 2011

If you're ever in the market for a Silicon Valley hero you could do a lot worse than picking Steve Wozniak as your model for the ideal silicon valley millionaire.

Woz was not only a great engineer, he also gave something back to community that many Silicon Valley folks are loathe to part with: time. Philanthropy might be de rigueur in the circles of the millionaires but the time it takes to sign a check pales in comparison to the time Woz was willing to spend... teaching.

Being taught by Woz has benefits, not only did the students glean invaluable insight to the way Woz's mind works, Woz also made sure each student got a PowerBook 170 ($4,600) With the vast fortune at his disposal and a plethora of projects on the horizon Woz began volunteering to teach middle school classes this month in 1992.

  • I was thinking on the way into work today that more people should be like him. We take for granted the knowledge we hold and in some way should attempt to give it to the younger generation so they can take what we know and build on it then do it over and over again. As a whole we’d be far more advanced than we are right now.

Woz, more than a hero… A model for the human race.

  • What’s especially neat, is that he’s a model who enjoys life so much.  Giving *should* be a joy.  Creating *should* be a joy.  Heck, dancing with stars *should* be a joy.
