March 19, 1990: Apple Unleashes Wicked Fast IIfx

by Chris Seibold Mar 19, 2011

Power users have always been more than willing to pay for performance, and Apple was willing to accommodate them with the Mac IIfx. The machine featured a positively blazing (for the time) 40 MHz 68030 processor. Other speed enhancements were found throughout the internal structure of the "wicked fast" Mac IIfx.

Naturally, Apple demanded a price premium for the power of the IIfx and when the machine was revealed the price tag was a credit card melting $9,900. Sure, the Mac IIfx required an investment one c-note shy of a cool ten grand but the IIfx remained the fastest Mac in terms of chip speed thatApple produced for nearly three years.

If you needed the power and were prepared to pay, you could start dreaming of "the power to be your best" on March 19, 1990 when Apple unveiled the most powerful (for the time) and expensive (still) Mac ever produced.
