March 31, 1999: Apple Releases First Open Source Contributions

by Chris Seibold Mar 31, 2011

There is a lot of Open Source goodness in Mac OS. Safari is based on an Open Source project and the underlying core of OS X is based on Darwin, an Apple Open Source project.

What seems commonplace and unavoidable today wasn't always such an accepted and unremarked on fact of life. The original Mac OS was built of purely proprietary code and most people expected things to stay that way whatever the eventual successor to Mac OS turned out to be.

When Apple announced their Open Source intentions the Open Source community cheered. When they actually posted the source to the web, people got a chance to download some Apple Open Source greatness. The first Open Source to come out of Apple was released this month in 1999.
