October 20, 1997: Last Newton Introduced

by Chris Seibold Oct 20, 2010

For those still enamored of the Newton, the most desirable model is the Message Pad 2100. The handheld (not pocketable) PDA was leaps ahead of most other Newtons. It featured support for an Ethernet card (a first). Users also loved the expanded memory of the 2100.

The fact that the Newton 2100 was even released is more interesting. Turns out that the 2100 was already complete when Jobs took the helm, and though efforts to spin the Newton off as a different company had been quashed, Apple released it anyway.

Apple's last Newton was introduced on October 20, 1997.

  • Tsssk, nine years, and mine still work, and work, and work… only the battery in one died this year. Just replaced it with 2700mAh AAs that should make the unit run for weeks on end.

  • Mine too.  Sound has died, but otherwise spot on reliable.

And I have a “new-in-box” MP2000 untouched if it ever does.
