Review: Xtrememac Nano Sportwrap

by James Bain Nov 10, 2006

A very good friend of mine, who just happens to have particularly large wrists, recently discovered that his iPod armband could be modified into a wristband, thereby turning his Nano into sort of an iWatch. Now he’s the envy of Fort McMurray. The caveat here though is that as Kevin’s wrists are only slightly narrower than Kate Moss’s waist, the modification works for him, but for everyone else smaller than a Sasquatch it’s not so effective.

I really like the idea of an iPod wristband. It makes so much more sense for work out use than an armband.

Humans, well, we have eyes stuck on the front of our heads and I haven’t met anyone yet who can twist their neck over hard enough while biking or running to look at the screen of an iPod strapped onto their upper arm.

Unless you’re blessed with eyes on stalks, in which case you can just flourish one of your ventral visual pseudopodia and quickly glam a gleek at your playlist whilst undulating across your variegated horizonatal exercise platform, you pretty much have to take your armband off to change anything on your iPod.

But, of course, there is a solution. You read this article’s title right? There’s Xtrememac’s Nano SportWrap.

Xtrememac claim to be ‘the iPod experts’ and based upon the wide array of products they have for iPods anyone can see why they feel they have the bragging rights to this. Take a quick look at their web site in case you have any doubts. You’re bound to be deeply impressed or amazed by at least one thing you see there.

So, the Nano SportWrap.

I think it’s great right off the bat just because it comes in purple as well as the usual and now getting slightly tiresome black. There just aren’t enough purple accessories for iPods on the market yet in my humble opinion. Most importantly, however, for the sense of this article, the Nano SportWrap comes with both an armband and, wait for it, a wristband.

Bingo!

Made of a very familiar but tried and true neoprene and Velcro combo, neither of the SportWrap’s two band options get slick or slippery even after the strongest workouts, and the secureness of these straps keeps the light Nano truly in place, whether you’ve got it on your upper arm or on your wrist.

I can belabor the technical too much sometimes, so I suggest you just go and look at Xtrememac’s site, specifically to their Nano SportWrap pages again, and there get your fill of all the nitty-gritty specs and details you could ever want. I’ll keep it brief, however, and just say that the earphone cable cleat they have is simply an amazing idea and that I wish something like this was used, in some non-copyright breaking way, by everyone who makes iPod cases.

It comes in purple. It comes with a wristband option that will, until Apple gets its act together, give you the only real workable iWatch experience I have yet seen. It doesn’t slip and stays in place when you’re really sweaty and bouncing around. And it’s only $29.99 US MSRP. A good deal. What are you waiting for? Go buy one. I give the Nano SportWrap an 80%.
