September 15, 1990: NeXT Station Introduced

by Chris Seibold Sep 15, 2010

The original NeXT computer was elegant and powerful, but the machine also had some serious shortcomings—a monochrome monitor, a very high price and no floppy support.

The second iteration of NeXT computers addressed these issues. The computers could be coupled with color monitors, came with a 2.88 MB floppy drive, used the brand new '040 processor and a 105 MB hard drive. The prices stayed high, naturally. The bottom of the line model went for $4,995.

Still, the computers were far more powerful than the top of the line Macs and made the NeXT lineup much more attractive. Not attractive enough to sell computers in a substantial quantity, but more attractive nonetheless. The second generation of NeXT computers were introduced this week in 1990.
