  • Come to think of it, I believe that XP updates have uninstallers as well. I'm not sure because I never had to uninstall an update, but I think they are listed in the Add/Remove Programs.........I better put on some flame retardant gear, that's two positive statements on XP in 10 minutes!

    Will Leopard Provide Real Rollback?
  • The System Restore feature in XP actually works very well. It automatically creates a restore point and you can create a restore point as needed. I've had to use it a couple of times & I had no issues what so ever. This would be a great addition to OS X.

    Will Leopard Provide Real Rollback?
  • Hmmmmmmmm........Free college. My student loan payment begs to differ. A large portion of the cost of post-secondary education is paid for by the various levels of Government, for Canadian citizens, so there is still some tuition cost. Although, compared to the cost of college in the States, it is a bargain, at least for Canadian citizens ; ). Of course, I don’t like the perquisite of paying music execs for the backing up my own data. I have an i pod that’s loaded with songs I either purchased from i tunes or from legally purchased CD’s, that the music execs have already gotten a cut of. I don't think I've ever created a music CD. A few tapes back in the 80's maybe......I'm hoping there's a statute of limitations on my previous life of crime!!
  • Actually, there is no longer a Blank Media Levy on iPods or other MP3 players in Canada. A Canadian Judge threw out that law on December 17, 2004. However, there is still a Blank Media Levy on CD-R's, DVD-R's, etc.
  • I have an addendum to add to my above statement.....The final result of this OS over the internet (??iOS??) will turn the home computer into a TV on steroids. Just another way to stream content into the home. The downside of this is it will give the OS providers more control of the content. Do you think MS will provide access to an Apple site? I can predict endless errors telling you the site isn't responding or doesn't exist, because IE will be the browser you use to access the content provided. How many private or independent TV stations are there now? Not too many here in Canada, at least with a viewership of more then a couple of hundred people (community TV). If you control the means of communication, you control the content. My intention is not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it would definitely make live advertising within the OS possible & advertisers have a big say in content. With Tivo changing the way people watch TV, this could be the way to advertise in the future. Right now, you get advertising on tv & web sites, imagine getting it while you work as well. How annoying would it be to be working in Photoshop & be bombarded by advertisements for printer ink, the latest, greatest precision mouse known to mankind & granola bars as the optimal snack for your coffee break?

    The Operating System Is Dead
  • Instead of buying a OS with the computer, you'll get it from the internet instead? This sounds like you will have the opportunity to pay for it constantly. Sort of like subscription computing. This is a model where even hardware won't matter. All you would need is a terminal linked to a neighbourhood mainframe. A computer would consist of a monitor, optical drive and a mouse & keyboard (an iMac without a CPU, HDD and all the other goodies). And like many other subscription services, price is the determining factor. The bigger the user base, the better the deals. As well, you’ll be force-fed your OS. Apple won’t survive this. Without OS X, Apple is just top end hardware. There are several companies offering top end hardware, crappy OS, but that’s a different matter. There will be no reason to switch from MS OS to Apple OS. All the Windows security problem will disappear. It would be much easier for MS to control the OS & make it more secure when you have to connect to their servers to get it. Windows user apathy will work in MS’s favour. The big question is who will come out on top, MS or Google, because Google will get in on this action. If there isn't an OS at all & the apps run OS free, the cost of the programs will increase to cover the additional cost to provide what was in the OS (fonts, libraries, etc.). You will also lose any consistency in the appearance of a program. Most people, including mac users, use their computers to work. If Adobe started putting out the CS package as a stand-alone program, no OS required, why buy Apple? The bottom line is the factor that will decide hardware. Back to the neighbourhood mainframe analogy, the form factor is no longer that relevant. The prettiest monitor, mouse & keyboard is the only aesthetic option.

    The Operating System Is Dead
  • Well said. It must be tiring trying to surprise people with new or better products and get nothing but complaints because the new or improved product doesn't live up to the speculation or hype. At least Apple is improving their existing products and adding features when they have been vetted and proven to work. As to Alasdair's comment about getting a widescreen & wi-fi enabled iPod, that may be more likely when iTV (or whatever it's called) is released. It would be a nice add on to the iTV connected livingroom. Of course, the hype & predictions will run rampent at that time, so be prepared to be disappointed!! People will probably be expecting the new wi-fi enabled iPod to double as a garage door opener or something similer.

Apple Will Never Surprise Us Again
  • MS can bundle software with their OS too. They just shouldn’t make it an integral part of the OS like IE is. As well, PC makers like Dell, HP & Sony add tons of their own software to their computers. Apple isn't unique in this regard.

Leopard Preview Gives Clue to Top Secret New Feature
  • I think Apple was holding BC back until someone figured out how to get XP running on an Intel Mac. The timing was too perfect. I also think that MS would be working furiously on the Intel VPC update, just because of the new market possibilities for them. I also think that with the way MS has been dropping their Apple products lately, only commiting to support Office for Mac for another 5 years, plus their track record for new products, Apple would be silly to count on MS for virtualization. This is one of Apples best chances for new growth. Superior HW & OS didn't work. The iPod did. So if Apple turns themselves into a consumer gadget company that sells computers as a sideline, they may have some success, but they will have to expand their line of products & compete directly with Sony.

Virtualization: Running Any OS Within OS X
  • Acually, this is the exact phrase from the microsoft.com/mac FAQs about VPC for Intel Macs: "We are working with Apple to determine the feasibility of developing Virtual PC for Mac for Intel-based Macs. ". Determining the feasibility of developing VPC kind of leaves it possible that virtualization could be in Leopard.

Virtualization: Running Any OS Within OS X
  • I for one think that Apple is doing the right thing by keeping the Intel systems as close to the PPC systems as possible. A reason that Apple should remain with the status quo for case design / system design is their track record with new products. Changing the CPU while keeping the other existing components the same (with minor upgrades) is limiting what can go wrong with this major change. If Apple rolled out completely new products along side the Intel switch & there were a few major bugs, they may lose new switchers that had waited for the Intel Macs. There have been a few defects talked about with the Intel Macs on the Apple support page discussions forum, but they seem to be mostly defects that the PPC Macs have as well. I haven’t read them all, so I could be wrong, there may be a whole new crop of Intel Mac specific defects. I’m sure someone will point those out to me. I would like to see them, as I’m currently considering replacing my PB.

Does the Mac Lineup Need a Makeover?
  • I can operate it by touch....only has 5 buttons with 1 function each.....the epitome of the KISS principle.
  • If Apple included a native program to run Windows, sort of like vpc or x window, on the OS X desktop, that will take away the need of setting up a dual boot machine. That would avoid the above scenario. You do require a decent box to do this, but with Apple's standard specs, that shouldn't be a problem. Just add lots of ram.

    Will Apple Go All In?
  • Why not combine a free energy scheme with a 'book upgrade? Make the cover a solar cell to charge the battery. Free energy & longer battery life as the 'book will be charging constantly. If it isn't patented, I call it first!!

What Do You Want Out Of The Intel Based Mac Laptops?
  • I would also like to see the power supply cord on the PB made a little tougher. It doesn't seem to stand up to stand up to much abuse (at least mine don't). Mine isn't a nice white where it plugs into the PB anymore, it's now black from the electrical tape holding it together.
