Apple Matters On New Dedicated Server

by Hadley Stern Feb 21, 2006

Hopefully you are noticing the site is loading much quicker today!

After some big traffic spikes that rendered the site unavailable for periods of an hour or two we have taken the plunge and gone to a dedicated server. Thanks the to fine folks at pMachinehosting everything seems to have gone very very smoothly.

However, if any of you readers notice anything funky drop .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) me a line.

For those who are interested Apple Matters is hosted on a Sun dual-core server with 2 gigs of ram. The OS running the site is Redhat Linux enterprise. Why not an xserve you very reasonably ask? I looked into it but the OS X platform simply does not have the market penetration that allows for the level of PHP tuning that Linux does. Does this mean that Apple doesn’t matter? Of course not! It just means that it wasn’t the right tool for this particular job.

  • When you say that Xserve doesn’t have the same level of PHP tuning as a Linux server, could you elaborate further?
