August 21, 1998: Quark Attempts Takeover of Adobe

by Hadley Stern Aug 21, 2010

In the world of professional graphic design Macs are the tools of choice for page layout and image manipulation. The two biggest dogs in the desktop publishing pack are Quark and Adobe. Quark's claim to fame is QuarkExpress. Adobe is known first for Photoshop and later for a slew of much loved programs including Illustrator and InDesign.

Staunch competitors to say the least, the two companies didn't see eye to eye on a lot of things. When Quark offered to buy Adobe, many in the industry questioned the seriousness of the bid, because Quark's annual revenue was estimated at well below half that of Adobe.

To Quark the marriage seemed like a natural fit. To many customers of both companies, and to Adobe itself it seemed like a bad idea. Adobe soundly rejected Quark's offer made this week in 1998.

  • Tell me about it.  I pointed this out on another article.  The writing on Apple Matters really does sound pedestrian at the best of times, and downright awful at others.

Why should the mac fratenrity bother to read a website whose authors clearly can’t be bothered to pay even the slightest attention to the quality of their output?

  • Proofreading would seem to be a good idea.

As for the article, just stating the fact that it happened is not sufficient. Stating it badly is worse.

How about editing! Is there an editor in the house?

  • Ok, ok you’ve all had fun critiquing the site’s grammar, and I have to agree. I’m the new editor, and I’ve been brought in to turn the site’s articles into better English. One of my tasks will be going through all of the history articles and proofreading them and fact checking them. But seriously, if any of you know something is off timewise, let me know. Thanks for the feedback. Meiera

  • Hadley, hire or affiliate with Dan Eran (also known as Prince McLean @ AppleInsider) at Roughly Drafted Magazine as your Mac (or tech) historian. Have you read this guy’s stuff? This guy is a living Wikipedia and I mean it.
