WWDC Dates Add to iPhone Excitement and Intrigue

by Chris Howard Mar 30, 2009

What was the most exciting news you heard this week from Apple? The WWDC dates, of course! June 8th to 12th.

There's nothing better than hearing WWDC is in early June. I always did hate the ones held over to July, and worse, August. Oh, the wait! Imagine if you woke up next October and got told Santy Claus had postponed Christmas until February? And just the year when you were champing for that new bike.

So we can rejoice that we won't have to wait a couple of extra months to see another lashing of Appley goodness.

And this years WWDC will be even more exciting than most. Oh, okay, you're right. The last few years have all very been exciting, with iPhone 3G, iPhone, Leopard, Intel Macs etc. WWDC is the premiere event on the Apple calendar, and the one to get most excited about - even before Apple ditched Macworld. And despite it being all about developers, it always brings announcements us boring old consumers get very excited about too.

And this year's WWDC looks likely to give all iPhone owners a brand new iPhone - for free! Although you can reasonably argue many of the features of the upcoming iPhone 3.0 firmware should have been there all along and so should be free, but I'm still pinching myself. Christmas in June!

It is very likely that Apple will release iPhone 3.0 to correspond with WWDC and will again showcase developer's work on the new release, hopefully including a few new ones, not just rehashing last month's demos. At worst, if there are any delays, we might only get an announced release date, as we did with the iPhone 3G. Make us sweat a little bit longer. But here's hoping June 8th we can get our mitts on iPhone 3.0.

And just below the iPhone 3.0 on the excitement meter will be the likely release of one or more new iPhone models. Evidence has been found in the iPhone 3.0 beta . Almost certainly we'll see an updated iPhone 3G, some rumoring it will have a better camera, faster WiFi and video capabilities. I'm also not over the idea of an iPhone nano, which would basically be almost the same dimensions but without a few features like GPS and WiFi. Again you can expect to see see Apple demo new phones, and provide a release date.

A more interesting possibility about this WWDC date is it might see the return of Steve Jobs. He is due back on deck around that time, and if there are new iPhones to show off, you could imagine he'd be busting to be the one to show them off. That said, his stand-ins are doing a good job and it would be a great opportunity for Apple to reinforce that it is not a one-man band.

So, install your countdown widgets on Dashboard, only 72 more sleeps until WWDC.
