  • Chris S., thank you very much. I will be trying to this soon. I do have a Time Capsule and use Time Machine, so I will be able to backup the new Mac first, thanks. Thank you so much for your e-mail address. I will contact you if I need to.

    Review: Apple's Backup
  • Okay so this article and the comments are from almost four years ago, but I am hoping somebody will still comment back to me regarding this. I stumbled upon this simply because I was trying to find evidence to prove that Backup was an Apple application. A Certified Apple Technician at a local computer repair place was telling me she hadn't heard of it before and that it was not an Apple application! So I have verified that it is an Apple app and can still be found by MobileMe users. Please keep reading because I do have an important question! Thank you. My whole problem began when my PowerBook G4 died. I got a new MacBook Pro, but unfortunately discovered that the Migration Assistant cannot be used to handle the backups I did with Backup onto an external hard drive, in-part because it just won't, but also I have read that you need to be really careful when moving files from a PowerPC Mac to an Intel Mac because you can do damage, corruption can occur, etc. Fortunately, when I did access my external hard drive with the MacBook Pro, I found that, from what I can see, Backup did do its job and I can get files off of it. However, it's an tedious, time-consuming process, because each backup is encrypted and each one has its own disk image, so you have to open each one one-by-one to find where things are; you can't just search for files. If I have to get all my stuff moved over this way, it will take me forever and will be extremely annoying. It had not occurred to me until now that I could possibly download and install Backup onto my new MacBook Pro, and do a restore from the external HD. But my question is, should I even do this, or could it possibly damage my new MacBook Pro because of those same PowerPC Mac to Intel Mac problems? (In regards to your post, I had never read or heard anything about testing your backups before. I only did a full one once then always incremental after that. Hope I don't have any problems.) Thank you to anybody who can provide any advice or help.
